Tips For New Runners
Running is a great sport for beginners or those looking to improve cardio, it can be done locally and there is no need for specialist equipment. You don’t need to invest in any fancy clothing, shoes or protein snacks when you first start out — the key is to just get going! Plan an easy route, break up the run with walking intervals and just get moving.
That brings us nicely to tip number 1…
Just Get Moving
It’s easy to get caught in a pit of Google searching, desperately trying to find the right strategy to get started. Finding sports personnel who offer advice are great but they can often leave you feeling intimidated and anxious about going out for a run. A few things to remember is that no one is actually looking at you and even if someone happens to glance at you they aren’t judging you. Plus you’ll feel so accomplished after the run that any anxiety you initially had will fade away.
Pace and distance is talked about extensively when looking at other beginner guides but when you first start out forget about all that. The only pace you need to worry about is that you are going at your own pace. The distance isn’t important either, push yourself but don’t focus on the number.
Keep It Interesting
Running might not be something you fall in love with instantly but don’t give up there are several ways you can keep yourself entertained. We recommend finding an interesting podcast, a motivating playlist or picking new locations to go running. You can find scenic parks, reservoirs and basically anywhere that has pretty sights to see! This will help to keep the runs interesting and as you begin to build strength and endurance you can explore new places.
You don’t just have to change the location, you can mix up the incline too — just remember running uphill is harder so build up to it slowly.
Don’t Expect Too Much Too Quickly
The human body is super efficient at storing calories and burning calories to lose weight or tone up takes time. You might want instant results and social media often leads us to believe that results are easy. But the truth is people have to put in a tremendous amount of effort to lose weight but starting is the hardest part! Once you work running into your routine it’ll become a part of your schedule that you look forward to and over time you will see the results you are wanting.
We hope that these top three tips will help you and help you feel more confident about starting running.
